🌿 A Little Piece of History: St Margaret’s Well, Mugswell 🌿
Tucked away in our beautiful garden here at The Well House Inn in Mugswell, Surrey, lies a fascinating piece of local history — St Margaret’s Well, also known as Mag’s Well. 💧
This remarkable well has a story stretching back centuries. It is reputed to be mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and it is believed that the nearby hamlet of Mugswell takes its name from the well itself.
The well is around 42 metres (approximately 138 feet) deep, making it an impressive historic feature hidden within the pub’s garden.
✨ What makes St Margaret’s Well particularly special is that it is still used today — not just a relic of the past, but a living connection to the history beneath our feet. The well is used to help monitor underground water levels, linking centuries of local heritage with modern-day water management.
💡 Did you know? The well is approximately 138 feet deep — that’s about the height of a 13-storey building!
It’s amazing to think that, while visitors enjoy the garden and the charm of this historic country inn, they are standing beside a well that has been part of the local landscape for generations.
Have you ever stopped to look at this wonderful piece of local heritage? 🌳💚
