This Deaf Awareness Week, we’re celebrating the importance of communication, inclusion, and creating spaces where Deaf culture is experienced not just talked about.
At Dialogue Café, our Deaf baristas are at the heart of the experience. Guests are encouraged to order using BSL, creating meaningful interactions and helping build confidence in everyday communication with the Deaf community.
We also offer BSL signing lessons, giving people the opportunity to learn, connect, and better understand the value of accessible communication.
Because inclusion starts with communication. 🤟

Coffee is just the excuse.
Today at UEL, we shared what Dialogue Café is really about - not just serving coffee, but designing encounters.
Grateful for the engaged students who showed up, asked questions, and stepped into something unfamiliar. That’s where the real shift begins.
Because most people don’t avoid interaction…
they just don’t know how
What we’re building is not just a café.
It’s an experience.
And maybe that’s where the conversation needs to start.

Big thanks to our facilitators, Victor and Karissa, for leading our latest BSL Taster Session! 🤟
There is something truly powerful about learning from those with lived experience. As Deaf and Hard of Hearing facilitators, Victor and Karissa brought a perspective to the session that you simply cannot get from a textbook - sharing their personal insights and real-world realities with our group.
Throughout the workshop, we:
✅ Explored Deaf Awareness and challenged common misconceptions.
✅ Learned essential daily BSL signs to help get started.
✅ Put communication into practice through interactive, hands-on activities.
A huge shoutout to our interpreters for their vital support, ensuring the session remained fully accessible for everyone. Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn, unlearn, and connect!

At Dialogue Café, visits like this go beyond just food and drink, they create real impact. 🤟
Here’s a reflection from Sylvia, a teacher from Oak Lodge School, following their visit with students and staff.
The group had a fantastic experience, enjoying the food and service while also taking part in a session on recruitment and career pathways. The insights shared helped students start thinking about their future and the steps towards employment.
A meaningful visit that shows how spaces like Dialogue Café can support learning, confidence, and future opportunities.

At Dialogue Cafe, visits like this are all about learning, connection, and new experiences. ☕
Feedback from one of the Oak Lodge School (Balham) students highlighted the positive atmosphere, the opportunity to learn fingerspelling, and how meaningful it was to see Deaf staff working in the cafe.
It is a great example of how these visits leave a lasting impression, with students already keen to return with their friends!

Dialogue Express Café is now permanently closed.
But Dialogue Café continues to welcome you at RDCS, University of East London, Docklands Campus.
