When an elderly customer who lives on the top floor of a 10-storey block of flats couldn't get to the shops because the lift wasn't working Robyn and James from our Tamworth store came to the rescue.

The lady phoned the store asking for help placing an online order for the first time. Online team leader Robyn said: "She was getting quite distressed and upset, as there was no way she could get to the shops as she couldn't walk down the stairs. I felt terrible for her and told her not to worry. She gave me a list of the things she wanted – mainly big bottles of water and long-life milk – and I got a trolley and bought them for her. I just thought it was a nice thing to do."

Robyn asked her colleague James to deliver them to her – and he battled up the stairs to get to the customer's flat. He said: "It was a good workout! The lady was lovely and very appreciative. I stayed and had a chat with her and I think she appreciated a bit of social interaction. It was nice to think I made her day."

When the lift was back working the lady called into the store with a thank you card for the colleagues. Online manager Nicki said: "Until the lady came in I didn't know the full extent of what Robyn and James did, as they played it down as if it was just part of their job to help someone. I’m so proud of them both." Robyn was reimbursed by the store for her kindness.

Thank you Angela!

When a partially-sighted customer needed a little help getting round our Park Royal store, checkouts colleague Angela was happy to help him get his groceries.

Angela offered to take the customer round the store, picking out items he asked for, before packing the shopping for him and making sure he got on the right bus home. She said: "I love my job and everyone knows that I will help anyone. I put customers first all the time."

Store manager Sevgi said: "Angela showed patience, care, and respect, ensuring the customer felt comfortable and supported. Her actions went above and beyond demonstrating empathy, initiative, and a true commitment to helping others."

Here's the moment checkouts colleague Sonia from our Handsworth store in Sheffield met up again with one-year baby Makiah whose life she saved when he choked on some food by one of the tills.

His mum, Ashleigh, and six-year-old sister Malicah called in at the store to say thank you again to Sonia, who's been named regional winner in the Asda service superstar wards for her heroics. Sonia was on self checkouts when she spotted Makiah choking and coughing in a trolley basket seat. Ashleigh passed him to Sonia, who, with the help of a customer, managed to clear his airway after turning him onto his belly and patting his back hard.

She said: "My heart was going ten to the dozen. It was such a relief. It brought a bit of a tear to my eye when Makiah started to cry and just wanted his mum. Anybody else would have done the same. I saw Makiah choking and instinct took over. His mum was very grateful but I was just doing my job. I was just relieved that he was fine afterwards."

Ashleigh said: "When I got home afterwards I couldn't stop thinking of how Sonia and the other lady both potentially saved his life. My family and I are very grateful, and I'm so glad Sonia got an award for what she did. She was so kind to us afterwards too."

When Lou from our Hereford store spotted one of her regular elderly customers was a bit off colour she stepped in to help him finish his shopping and then walked him safely home.

The gentleman, who's in his 80s, was shopping on his own when he started to feel a little bit unwell and needed a sit down. Lou asked him if he was okay and then helped him get his remaining groceries, took him to a till and bagged up all his items. Then, after getting the okay from her team leader, she accompanied him home, which is about ten minutes away.

She said: "We always have a nice little chat when he comes in, he's a lovely gentleman. He just wasn't feeling too clever and I didn't want him to walk home on his own. We had a lovely chat on the way about his life; it was lovely. We took a little trolley with us and when we got to his house I took his shopping inside for him. I just wanted to help him, bless him, and he was very grateful. I love my job as I meet lots of lovely people, and it's nice to be nice and help people."

25/03/2026

I had the honour of addressing Members of Parliament to introduce myself, tell them a bit about our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign and to remind them all about the importance of regularly checking their chest.

Here's my speech:

Good evening My name is Donna Turner, and I am the Community & Customer Champion at Asda Park Royal. I have worked for Asda for over 23 years. I am truly passionate about creating a stronger community for our customers and colleagues.

I help raise vital funds, raise awareness of our own National Charity, Asda Tickled Pink, and partner with Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!Throughout my time at Asda, I have received various awards, and after 23 years of service I was the proud winner of the "Retail Colleague of the Year".In my role as Community & Customer Champion, I have supported numerous local and national charities.

My work with Tickled Pink involves fundraising activities, bucket collections, raffles, tombola in-store events, bag packing, and more recently, promoting the sale of Tickled Pink products and working alongside breast cancer specialists to provide vital information to both men and women. This information includes encouraging people to check their chests and highlighting the importance of attending breast screening appointments. The funds raised are used by Asda's charity partners, Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!, to raise awareness and support initiatives such as funding research into early detection of breast cancer.Research is crucial in improving outcomes for those affected by the disease.Working with Tickled Pink has shown me that breast cancer can affect anyone, that early detection saves lives, and that regular self-checks are essential, along with encouraging others to do the same. Therefore, I kindly ask all of you here to pledge to check yourselves regularly, starting from today.Thank you.

Fresh Horizons CNB Provides fresh and non-perishable food through their Foodbank every Friday for those in need within our local community.

We presented a cheque for £600 from the Asda Foundation to Debbie and her team at the Foodbank located at the Methodist Church High Street Harlesden, where food packages are distributed to recipients of all family sizes. Tickets are handed out to individuals recipient from 8:30 am, and food is packed and distributed by volunteers. At 12:30 pm the chain of service is created for a smooth and orderly transfer of packages to the recipient, over 100 were handed out on Friday 6th. The line seemed endless as the needs of individuals varied. I observed and participated in the full operation behind the scenes, and credit is due to the management team. Ms Taylor, who manages the centre, leads with thorough knowledge of each individual and treats them with respect. Each recipient's needs are met with great compassion.

Fresh Horizons CNB not only supports the Foodbank but also assists the homeless by offering a safe and stable living environment for those on the journey back to independent living. They provide supported accommodation, which includes life skills training, basic care, and counselling services. This encourages individuals to achieve their goals by restoring their self-confidence and independence. Their services are offered to individuals referred by Night Shelters and other homeless shelter organisations across Greater London.

We had a lot of fun in our store ahead of Valentine's Day – transforming it into a setting for a fun dating initiative!

We introduced special red shopping baskets on February 14 for singles to choose instead of the classic green ones to signal to others they're "open to talk".

If the basket is green, don't be too keen, if their basket is Red, love may spread! I had the pleasure of serving the first individuals to meet this Valentine's at our store.

Here’s Barbara from Young Lives vs Cancer is collecting donations for Paul's House charity.

We know that the impact of cancer on young lives extends beyond the medical, and that impact can be felt by the entire family. That’s why they exist.

Young Lives vs Cancer is the only charity in the UK with specialist social workers who provide tailored support to children and young people with cancer and their families.

They recognise that everyone's different, so they work hard to provide support that’s easy to access and tailored to individual needs, from helping families navigate the emotional and practical impact of cancer to removing barriers and addressing the challenges that come with a diagnosis. They prioritise well-being and take care of the non-medical aspects. They stop at nothing to make sure the voices of children, young people and families are heard and their unique needs understood, this way, the right care and support is given at the right time when needed.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who are giving their time to support our Tickled Pink campaign – like Asda customer Danine, who's always ready to lend a hand to our Park Royal store's community champion Donna.

Danine, who's 42, knows from her own experience how important it is to get into the habit of regularly checking your chest for anything unusual – and acting on anything of concern as quickly as possible. She waited two months before seeing her GP when she felt a lump two years ago, and by the time she started treatment it had spread to multiple places in her breast and lymph nodes.

Danine said: "Before it was a case of doing something in the name of helping, but when you become a victim of the same disease you can really empathise even more because of the experience of it. So when Donna asked if I was interested in helping this year I said 'sign me up' because I want to do whatever it takes to raise awareness and get more people tested. It's my local store. I am always there – my car lives in the Asda car park! Everything I need is there, the people are friendly and you see Donna's smiling face."
