It’s not lost on us that today is , and it’s also the final day that we trade as Flat Earth Pizzas in its current guise 💔

Whilst we don’t really know exactly what’s next, we do know we’re exceptionally proud of the restaurant and community we have built. Bootstrapped, no external investors. Rich and I did it our way.

What started as a 2-person pop-up in East London in 2019, ended with an established restaurant 4 years old, practically to the day.

Here’s what our team achieved:
- 100,000+ meat-free, veg-forward pizzas served
- 5,000+ litres of organic wine on tap poured: 6,000 single-use bottles avoided, 96% lower carbon per glass
- Food waste was 30% below industry average (officially audited)
- 100% renewable energy since day one
- Facilitated 2,200+ organic veg bag collections with Growing Communities
- Free monthly coffee mornings after the closure of East London Cares, because loneliness matters
- Thousands of pounds donated to charities, predominantly to the unsung heroes at the local hospice
- 70%+ team retention in an industry notorious for the opposite- our team has been our super power
- 4.8 Google rating across 600+ reviews

We’ve been named Britain’s Best Pizza, ranked 2nd in Time Out’s most sustainable London restaurants, earned a 3-star SRA rating and I got named “Sustainability Trailblazer” in CODE Hospitality’s women on the year.

None of this is accidental. It’s the result of small, consistent choices - in sourcing, in how we treat our team, in who we partner with, in what ends up in the bin (or doesn’t).

I share it not to boast (how can I? it’s all ending!), but because we think it matters. Sustainable hospitality doesn’t have to be expensive, niche or joyless. It can be a neighbourhood pizza restaurant that just quietly gets on with it, year after year.

Also, building something with your husband does not come easy(!!) but on a personal note, during this time, Rich and I also bought a home, got engaged then married, each had a milestone birthday, survived grief and adopted the best cat.

We have nothing but thanks and hope for what’s to come.

We miss everyone already!! X

MERCH TO REMEMBER US BY 💔

We’ve finally got around to doing merch.

It’s something we always talked about and somehow never got round to but now feels like the right time to mark everything Flat Earth Pizzas has been with something you can actually wear.

Our new t-shirts (and hats!) are made from certified organic cotton and come in three different designs inc Rich’s Thrasher homage. There’s a QR code on the care label too, so when it’s finally reached the end of its life, you can send it back to be remade.

They’re printed using low-waste technology and made in a factory powered by renewable energy, with strong social and sustainability standards throughout.

If you’d like one, they’re available now via the link in bio.

Two weeks and 1 day left.

Since we announced our closure, the love that’s come our way has genuinely floored us. Stories of birthdays, post home births deliveries, redundancy dinners, anniversaries... turns out we really did become the community restaurant we always hoped to be. That means everything.

One of our regulars joked that having celebrated his wedding, birthdays and everything in between with us, he was sure he’d be hosting his funeral party here too.

We told him there’s still time.

Two weeks. Book in. 🍕

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END //

After 6 and a half sweat-busting years, Rich and I have decided to call time on Flat Earth.

What started as a little pizza popup un 2019 will end having been a full fledged restaurant for the past 4 years (almost to the day).

For some, FE will be another statistic in hospitality’s ongoing bloodbath. For many, we hope we’ve been a little bit of magic on the corner of Vyner Street.

Being busy these days is just not enough! With over 30% of our turnover being taken away through central and local government taxing and ever spiralling operating costs yet another goose dies having laid its last golden egg.

On top of that, a big old chunk of money has been stolen from us by our former landlord which means the goalposts haven’t just shifted - they’ve disappeared. It’s gone from stressful-in-an-expected-way to stressful-in-a-can’t-sleep kinda way. That’s no fun for anyone.

The hardest part of all this (aside from making the decision itself) was telling our loyal, brilliant team. We couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more understanding response.

It’s not all doom and gloom; we’re unbelievably proud of what we’ve all built together and the impact we’ve had. This place has always been special - you can feel it the moment you walk in. We’ve all been through a lot: from our windows being smashed in THREE times (remember that?!) to an awful lot of good times like the balmy summer evenings when we filled the pavement with as many tables and chairs as possible. My god it was HOT working those shifts. We’ve hosted weddings (inc our own), coffee mornings for the local community, a veg growing competition, wine events, birthday parties and just your regular popping Friday nights. Flat Earth also provided me with structure and support when I was going through the darkest of grief. It’s been more than just a restaurant; it’s a collective of people who really care.

So this is our one month’s notice to you all before we hang up our pizza paddles. We’ll be closing our doors in mid-to-late April, with the exact date confirmed very soon.

Until then, we’d hope to see as many of you as possible for a final visit (or two)…

Sarah and Rich X
