There’s something to be said for a quiet moment in the pub.
A good pint; people watching, journalling or reading a book.
In a city that never seems to slow down, sometimes the best thing you can do is take some time for yourself.
Whatever you do, do it at The Ring.

The press were always welcome at The Ring, even at a time when boxing was considered taboo by the major national newspapers. In those early days, coverage was limited mainly to local sporting papers, until Dick Burge secured a private interview with Lord Northcliffe and convinced the newspaper owner that public interest in boxing, especially at The Ring, was rapidly growing.

Soon after, the first ever boxing photograph appeared on the front page of the Daily Mirror. The Ring had broken through the barrier, and before long the national press were competing for exclusive boxing images and stories. By 1914, the Mirror had even installed special lights above the ring to improve the quality of photographs.

You could say the boxing coverage we know today - and the media fascination with the sport - all traces back to that one interview with Dick Burge, and Lord Northcliff putting it on the front page. It opened the door for boxing news to reach fans far beyond those lucky enough to be sitting ringside.

In its early days, The Ring quickly earned a reputation as the “Nursery of Champions”, with many of Britain’s most celebrated boxers beginning their careers there as novices.

One of the first was Jimmy Wilde, later famously nicknamed “The Ghost with a Hammer in His Hand.” Standing just 5ft tall and weighing only 6 stone 10 lbs, Wilde possessed extraordinary punching power for his size. After his manager, Ted Lewis, boasted about Jimmy’s remarkable knockout record, Dick Burge arranged for him to fight Matt Wells - known as “The Nipper” - at The Ring. After ten hard-fought rounds, Jimmy emerged victorious, winning his first London bout at The Ring.

Wilde went on to enjoy an incredible 15-year career, competing in more than 900 contests, and is still regarded by many as the greatest flyweight boxer ever to lace up a pair of gloves. Today, a framed photograph of Jimmy proudly hangs on the walls of our pub.

On 14th May 1910, Dick and Bella Burge hosted the grand opening night of The Ring. In the lead-up, a large contingent of down-and-outs had been recruited to help transform the venue: seating was erected, signs were painted, posters appeared across Southwark, and an illuminated electric sign reading “THE RING” was proudly positioned above the entrance.

Little did they know that this opening night would mark the beginning of a venue that would go on to host some of the finest boxing ever seen south of the river. Admission cost just three shillings - around 15p in today’s money - and with that, an era was about to be born.

When we share stories about our history and the venue we are named after, most people assume the name “The Ring” comes from the roped square where fighters would go toe to toe, but they’d be mistaken.

When former British lightweight champion, Dick Burge and his wife, Bella, first came to view the premises, it was nothing more than a run-down former warehouse. Despite its condition, they saw its perfect potential as a venue to bring boxing to central London.

Finding the right name, however, proved far more difficult.

That was until one evening, when Bella opened the door and a stray black kitten wandered inside. The kitten was entirely black except for one small detail - a distinct ring of white fur around its neck. Taking it as a lucky omen, inspiration struck.
From that moment on, the old Surrey chapel became known as “The Ring”. A name that has lived on in the memories of boxers and fans ever since and we’re proud to carry that legacy forward in our pub.

Here at The Ring, we are more than just a pub. We are a place steeped in the history of South London’s most famous boxing arena – ‘The Ring’ - from which we take our name. Our pub exists to keep the story of this legendary venue alive. The walls are lined with tributes to the brave men who stepped into the ring: some in pursuit of glory, others simply to put food on the table. Although the original arena is gone, its history lives on here at The Ring. And we’re going to share its story with you… stay tuned.
