THE ACTOR BOXER
Willie Farrell lived within spitting distance of The Ring and fought there nearly 70 times, becoming a firm favourite with the crowds in the years before the First World War.
Known as “The Actor Boxer,” Farrell’s talents stretched far beyond the ring. As well as being a top-flight fighter, he possessed an excellent singing voice and regularly appeared on the stages of London’s music halls and theatres while pursuing his boxing career.
In 1921, matchmaker Dan Sullivan inaugurated the Ring Belt Competitions, bringing together some of the finest fighters in Britain across every weight division. Farrell claimed the Welterweight Belt after an extraordinary run in which he defeated five opponents in just six weeks, culminating in a gruelling 20-round final, with each round lasting three minutes.
In later life, Farrell settled in South America, where he put his considerable experience to use and became a leading boxing coach.
A fighter, performer and local favourite, Willie Farrell was a true character of The Ring’s remarkable history.

As manager of The Ring, Dan Sullivan built an impressive group of class boxers, many of which were signed to exclusive contracts if their following would attract worthy components that would satisfy the crowds growing appetite for the sport. Before long, there was never a shortage of hopeful fighters who would gather outside the competitors’ entrance with their kit wrapped in brown paper and a towel under their arm, hoping to be picked. Those selected waited in a wooden enclosure known as “”The Pen”” until it was their turn to step through the ropes. For many, it was the start of something special. Several went on to become outstanding fighters, and some would eventually rank among Dan Sullivan’s greatest champions.
