My mother's favourite tea as it reminds her of Sunday afternoons with my grandmother 🫖
Lapsang Souchong is a luxuriously smoky black tea that was first recorded in 1646 and comes from the Wuyi mountains of China. The name derives from the Fuzhou dialect: it is composed of the words La (pine) Sang (wood) and souchong (small sort) which refers to the type of leaves of the Camellia plant that are used to make the tea.
This tea is produced by smoking the larger, less flavourful leaves over a pinewood fire, and flavours can be customised by altering the height from the fire and the length of time for which it is smoked.
Mum and nonna always enjoyed theirs with a dash of lemon and some biscuits on Sunday afternoons as they talked about everything from reminiscing about London (they both lived in Rome at the time) to trivial family matters. Every time I open the jar to serve a customer, we both think of her 💙
