Rhubarb and strawberry cake exploding with peonies and poppies and the odd garden rose. thank you for commissioning this for your dear friends and thank you for all your beautiful words—and incredible song choice. When I first bought How to be a Domestic Goddess in an airport bookshop over 25 years ago, little did I know where my journey would take me! But let me say that the sentiment behind that book spoke to me on a deep level. The attitude, the irony, the humour and of course the fun. But especially the deliciousness of it all. My chef and I had a delightful time putting this together and being powerhouse pastry chef goddesses living out our London dreams. IYKYK

La dolce vita — Sicilian wild strawberry cake with lemon blossom and lemon leaf soak, and a little limoncello Swiss meringue buttercream. Each year I bring an assistant pastry chef to help me teach the participants how to do things the Violet way, but with Sicilian ingredients. Patrizia who is the Extraordinary housekeeper of is also the resident florist. Each day she creates breathtaking centrepieces for the tables and places fresh flowers and vines, fruits and objects throughout the property, also collected baskets of roses for us to@decorate the cakes with. And a special thank you to for taking me on a dawn walk to a patch of wild nasturtiums that we also embellished our cakes with. Also for rolling out sheets of our Bronte pistachio marzipan and getting everyone to play Charades/celebrity with such enthusiasm xx Always a dream🤍tickets now available for 2027. Go to for details. Moments caught on film from this year’s culinary retreat in the hills of Sicily beneath the watchful eye of Mt. Etna, overlooking the Ionian Sea. This year we had 20 guests, the most ever, and spent 7 perfect days and nights together, learning, laughing, cooking, baking, exploring and of course eating all the wonderful foods of Sicily. This year we had a special guest appearance by chef and best selling author — I mean, seriously, it’s the best retreat on earth.
Our brilliant and indefatigable host Jon has just released the tickets for next year’s course, April 2027. Act fast before it’s sold out x thank you to the wonderful for her .official shots. More photos to follow. There were so many good ones!

Thank you gorgeous and Harry .of_sussex for trusting me and my team to make your wedding cake 8 years ago today! It’s not every day you get asked to “do what you do” and design a cake for a prince and princess and to place the cakes on gilt platters and stands used by generations, displayed in front of and his piano then lanced with a sword. We were invited into Buckingham Palace to bake the cakes safely away from paparazzi gathering outside our small bakery in East London. But what I remember most was the love in every single room, palace, castle and kitchen we were in. It took 6 of us 5 days and a LOT of lemons and elderflowers 🍋🍋🍋 Happy Anniversary 💛💛💛 and the wedding cake tasters. 🩷

Sundays mornings at Violet ❤️❤️and Sunday mornings at mine! Franny and I went halvsies on the brownies topping because mini m&ms are great, but I’m more cacao nib myself. These brownies were exceptional btw. A recipe from my friend ‘s new cookbook Bittersweet. I love every single recipe this woman makes. She always puts texture at the forefront which as I always say to any chefs I work with, is as important as flavour balance. I’ve given you this recipe (we skipped the crystallising step because it was already 9pm— but I’ll try that next). Now go buy her book! Happy Sunday xx

We have been making more sheet cakes than round cakes recently which I love and think is a great idea. I love portioning a sheet cake for a big party and love that it’s just two layers of sponge and one layer of filling. You can never beat the simplicity of a round cake but these sheet cakes have got me all nostalgic for the cakes we used to dream about in the bakery department after soccer practice on a cool Spring day when mom way trying to do the weekly grocery shopping. I remember a lot of blue and pink buttercream roses on those sheet cakes. 🩵🩷

Happy Easter! While the amazing photos of the planets are giving us much needed hope and dreams of peace, little activities like this can also make the clouds roll away and the earth seem good again x The delicate work of foraging violets to stem them and decorate matcha lattes and make violet sugar x the perfect Easter experience right outside your door. We found these on a walk to the park. Edit and Franny were picking for well over an hour and came back to painstakingly pick off each stem, rinse and grind up with sugar. We made matcha lattes with our beautiful set from and the girls decorated them with fresh violets. All their ideas! I was so happy I can’t tell you hahaha. When I was a little girl just younger than Franny I wrote a story called “Talking Violets” my mom had a really cool typewriter that had cursive keys. As I told her the story, she typed it up onto red paper. It’s one of the reasons I called my bakery Violet. Because my mom and I would pick violets and bake in the valleys of Inverness in Northern California. I never imagined Franny would be picking violets in patches of green on an estate in East London 40 years later. I love the dichotomy and I love that no matter where violet pop up in the world they bring mystery and inspiration to children. Go foraging everyone! Have a wonderful Easter with your families x

Last month I met the one and only Delia Smith at the restaurant awards where I was a judge and she was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
I introduced myself and told her that when I moved to London and started , I was told I’d better learn how to make mince pies and Christmas cakes if I wanted to start a cake business. And with that I picked up as many of her books as I could find. I wanted to learn from this British icon of cooking at home. Someone who knew what people wanted to eat, much in the same way Alice Waters did in America. She gave instructions like, “do it if you can, but it isn’t disastrous if you can’t” which really took the stress off a California girl with very little experience of dried fruit and maturing cakes! I watched the shows too obviously, but I’m a cookbook girl, so I read and read and baked and baked.
When I was leaving I asked if she was writing anything new, “a book on community” she told me. Just when I thought I couldn’t love her more.

Robin’s egg madeleines Friday through Monday to celebrate the Easter Holidays!! We are also baking wild strawberry smash cakes, mini egg cupcakes and lemon meringue tarts. Honestly I can’t get enough of our madeleines. Brown butter and honey with our old fashioned glazes that change seasonally. It’s basically like a mini cake donut. 🍩 diet starts Tuesday 🫠

ICE CREAM SANDWICHES this weekend!!! Late last year I discovered .gelato through our friends and headed straight up to Dalston to ring the doorbell to be let through the gate down a little alleyway and into the warehouse where Tommy Rizzo makes his Italian-Argentinian gelato in London.
I love to visit his workshop or just order it direct through Deliveroo for dessert. I’ve fallen in love with the texture, and the flavour combos have a subtle confidence that I trust. I’ve tried almost every flavour!
This Friday and Saturday only, Tommy is bringing his creamy, small-batch gelato magic straight to Violet where we are collaborating on our first ever ICE CREAM SANDWICHES! We are baking fresh chocolate chip and oatmeal-raisin cookies to pair with Tano’s vanilla, flat white, and dulce de leche with chocolate gelatos in the perfect sandwich.
What better way to celebrate Spring Break and Easter holidays than this? Get in line early on Friday and Saturday from midday and meet Tommy himself! Let us know below if you’ll be coming by so we are sure to make enough!

Ten years ago I became a mother to this crazy cute, funny, daring, curious magical being I called Franny. What a great decision that was! It really is the most important job this busy woman ever had and I realise it and don’t take this gift for granted. But I also take it with lightness and grace and joy, each day as it comes. Our children can help us see what is so profoundly clear and essential in life when it feels like everything around us is trying to obscure and complicate it. Thank you my dear angel baby for choosing me. And thank you to all the mothers and godmothers around us helping to make this job easier and so much more fun. I see you x Happy UK Mother’s Day x

We will have bouquets for all the mothers in your life this weekend too. Whatever we might say, we love getting flowers. Especially from xx
