Gig at the Greenhouses: Alice Boyd – Shifting Soundscapes
Sunday 10 May, 6.30pm

Alice Boyd presents a live performance inspired by her BBC Radio 4 documentary ‘Shifting Soundscapes’, where she revisited locations legendary field recordist Martyn Stewart, dubbed the David Attenborough of nature sounds, recorded in the 70s. Blending voice, synths and live looping with field recordings gathered across the UK, the show explores how our environments are changing – and what we hear when we take the time to listen.

Moving between song and soundscape, the performance weaves together disappearing and returning sonic textures into an immersive, atmospheric set.

Support act to be announced.

🍅 It's Tomato Time again! Thinking of growing tomatoes this year? Here's your guide to transforming your seedlings into big, healthy and productive plants! 🌱

This week at the Greenhouses we will be continuing to pot on tomato seedlings - from modules into 9cm pots - and transfer them into lower temperature propagators - around 16 degrees. The sign that they are ready for this next stage is when the seedlings have two true leaves (leaves that resemble the mature plant) which is around 3 weeks after sowing. These look different from the first seed leaves that appear - those are 'embryonic' leaves or cotyledons which are the initial food source for plant growth. To avoid 'leggy' tomato seedlings, we carefully bury the whole stem up to the first set of leaves. Beneath the soil surface, the 'hairs' on the stem of tomatoes will develop into roots.

When we pot on tomatoes from modules, we switch from using relatively low nutrient Seed and Cuttings compost into General compost which has the higher nutrient level needed for the next stages of growth. We will continue to move the seedlings up into larger containers as they grow. Looking ahead, once the tomato plants are well established and in deep 2 litre pots, we will commence weekly liquid feeds to keep them healthy until they are planted out - usually in May. We use a compound fluid fertiliser with added seaweed extracts.

Also a note for those of you growing at home, you are not late sowing your tomatoes - we start early! There is plenty of time to sow now and grow on ready for a delicious summer crop.

New Workshop on Sale! 🌿
Introduction to Permaculture
Sunday 1 February, 2pm-4pm

Permaculture is an ethical design system, based on ecological principles, that creates sustainable and regenerative human habitats by following nature's patterns. This workshop will introduce permaculture by outlining the key ethics and principles and how they can be applied to a design process. We will look in particular at permaculture’s relevance to living in an urban context and how attendees can apply permaculture in their own lives.

The workshop will be lead by Susannah Hall . Susannah is a designer, trainer and facilitator for teaching their Permaculture Design Certificate course. She also teaches adults and children about crafts, the wildlife we find in the city and designs edible gardens that work with rather than against nature. Her balcony design with 50 different plants (see image), quails, a wormery and space for natural dyes won Camden in Bloom Best Mini-Garden 2021.
