Good times. Bad times. Pickle back time. 🥃🥒

We’ve always punctuated important moments, or even just gaps in a crazy service with a pickle back. They’re like a little delicious full stop.

We typically just drink the basic old bourbon & pickle juice combo.

But did you know we have a dedicated ‘pickled concoctions’ page on our menu.

And never to sound like those wankers who say ‘London’s biggest blah blah whatever it is’

But we do think we might be the only idiots with a pickle back menu so extensive that making the shrubs etc is a full time job.

As part of our imminent crowdfunding campaign we’ll be offering very cool personalised pickle key rings that get you a free pickleback every time you pop in. 😃

If there’s one man that’s helped shape the Shack it’s this beautiful one here,

Here’s a before and after of our cocktail bar in the Bunker. From box to ‘whaaaaaat!’.

The man responsible for the secret bookcase entrance.

The man who has decked out our garden more times than he cares to remember and the nicest, and not to mention most skilled carpenter we’ve ever known, Woody! 🔨

We / he have been tinkering away almost daily for 8 years now, and coming in to our NINTH year we’re planning some most magnificent modifications.

In Japan they have Kaizen. In Germany they have Shizer.

We’re somewhere in the middle, always looking to improve s**t daily.

“Yeah definitely, a 2nd site would be amazing, I really hope they make us call it “vegan shack” and stick us as far as you can get from the entrance!”

You learn a lot running a business.

Particularly as three very non-business men.

So when the opportunity to launch a semi permanent stand at Mercato Metropolitano in South London came up in our first year

We jumped at the chance, both feet, arms thrown up in the air like excited kids, without any real consideration of how we might, without cloning ourselves, and as it would turn out necessary, our very small core team too.

It was a disaster.

And yeah, being a faceless brand in a largely non-vegan market, and furthermore labelling ourselves’VEGAN SHACK’ (as we say, not our choice) didn’t help, but

We took it on, so you’ve gotta take responsibility.

We did too much too soon, and any money we took at the real ‘Shack’, was quickly swallowed up by the big gaping black hole that was the market stall.

And that really solidified our love for our home. And ever since then, the Shack has been our sole priority.

It’s the most incredible, unique, special, energetic place we know

So why would we want anything else.

That’s why we’re tinkering, building, redesigning and improving what we can, every single day.

We love the Shack more than anyone should love a building.

The place has so much to give, and gives so much, it’s like an endless resource.

The thought of going to ‘work’, despite the fact you know the toilet is blocked, is never not enticing. Well, almost.

Find what you love and you’ll never work another day in your life they say

Well, we found it. And whilst like a classic car it requires almost constant attention and graft, taking it for a spin on a sunny (or rainy) day makes every second worth it.

Sh****ad, a game with no winner, yet a game where the winning truly is taking part, and because of that, everyone wins.

When we see it being played in the wild it delights and amuses us that a game, largely, if not surely the reason for our dismal degree grades is played by other people.

In the early (first 5 years) of the Shack we’d often while away entire evenings sat on the sofas with grey pappar and mangled amalgamation of cards from various packs, having the most fun and shooting the s**t.

Making plans to take over the world, or at least to fix whatever had broken most recently.

And we spoke about this idea for YEARS.

BUT in the run up to our birthday, maybe it’s about time we organise it…

How about a SH****AD tournament here at the Shack?!?

Games knows how we’d manage it due to the aforementioned, lack of rules, but we’d dam well have some fun.

Roll with the punches…

Things might be tough for hospitality right now

But remember fu***ng Covid?!!

Yeah exactly.

And we’re not talking about the good bits like bounce back loans or the blooming ridiculous ‘Eat out to help out’ scheme or the mushrooms.

We’re talking: No furlough, bills to pay, almost permanent closure, staff to pay, isolation, uncertainty. Watching businesses close almost daily. People dying left right and centre.

Yeah, that was about as rough as it gets.

And obviously that changed EVERYTHING.

The way we live, shop, socialise. It’s all gone reversy Percy.

But what ya gonna do? Moan? Could do, but it ain’t paying rent and…

No one fu***ng cares.

So when times are tough we get grubbier, wok hard and think more creatively than ever. It’s human nature.

Survival.

During Covid we launched a vegan curry house which did better than any delivery options we’d tried previously

And turned the Shack into a fruit and veg box delivery hub, offering an INSANE

SAME DAY DELIVERY SERVICE under the name ‘Lovin store’.

Our ambition often, as still does, almost outstripped our physical capabilities

And meant we’d be at the fruit market at 4am filling up Jamie’s van (and house) and knocking on peoples doors, across an impossibly large area up to 23:59 at night with a box of carrots and some oat milk.

We’d then either sleep at the shack

Or walk round to where our vans were parked opposite each other and go to bed.

It was s**t. But there was a sense of excitement in being in those trenches too.

We proudly sold loads of our mates produce and everyone chipped in to make everything work.

And that’s what we need to do now.

Unite. Fight. And challenge a flawed system.

As a still image this looks like a grown techno loving man trying to fly a broomstick 🧹

But…

Did you know the Love Shack used to be a car garage specialising in sooped up Mercedes called ‘Rude Merc’s’

The floor to ceiling mirrors were great.

But not if you were trying to enjoy a romantic meal.

Literally like eating in a fun fair.

You were visible from a thousand fu***ng angles.

This is where are current cocktail bar is.

When we moved in the electrician we got in to retire the place wouldn’t touch it.

It took us three years before we took even a meagre salary, which would probably, even excluding the previous three years, work out to around £0.60 per hour 😂

Every penny we took went straight back into the place. And it took 3 years just to pay off the electric job.

Good job we were young, dumb and in love.

This might really mess up our already insanely messy algorithms

Already mildly confusing page design (if you were being generous), but for the next couple of weeks, in the run up to our 8th birthday

We’re gonna be digging into the vaults

And posting mostly commercially disastrous content, of which little will have to do with food and drink

Some of which may land us in hot water

But that’s ok, because we’re pirates and have spent almost everyday building a pretty solid ship since we opened

In a sea of restaurant closures

Where BREAK EVEN is a dream

We’ll be showing you why we’re still here fighting for every penny

Putting ourselves through amusing, absurd and infuriating situations. On a daily basis

Fixing constant leaks

Electrical failures

Dealing with business & N.i raised and everything else this mother trucking bunch of political nincompoops throw at us

On top of obscene energy and running costs

All so we can keep on with our mission of ‘Normalising Veganism’

A helping show how you can have ace food, drinks and events

Without causing harm

And lightening your environmental footprint

With a list as long as our are of things that need fixing and an almost empty bank account, we might even launch a LAST MINUTE

Crowdfunder campaign in order to make some much needed improvements - or potentially a skills swap. Skilled bits of work in exchange for food etc

Anyway for now

Not many people know that we used to…

Grow our own Lion’s mane mushroom. We had a shipping container in Hackney Wick and It was insanely fu***ng hard.

Probably fine if you’re JUST growing the mushrooms, but trying to run a restaurant AND look after a newborn baby, meant the complexities of consistent airflow & temperature control in parallel to humidity and Co2 regulation were WAY beyond our capabilities. 🫠

We now get our Lions Mane from uk growers, .farm.it and by god it’s easier.

We’ve now offer our Lion’s mane steaks in 6, 8 & 12oz sizes and the best bit…

None of those pieces come out of a dead cow that definitely didn’t want to be dead. 🐄

Oh, and it’s also really good for ya noggin. It’ll make you right smart. 🧠

By far our best selling dish, but did you know…

The tofu in our Tofu Karaage is made just 1 mile away on Brick Lane, by a superbly lovely independent called ‘Clean Bean’, who use organic, European soy beans.

Comes with a chilli tahini and sesame sauce, smacked cucumber salad, pickled daikon, pickle red onions and a liberally scattering of sesame seeds.

Table bookings HIGHLY recommended at weekends. 🥢

Jesus fu***ng Christ our lunch offer is good…

Sorry, just felt we needed to reference the big man up above during this very important period.

Lunch is getting busier by the day because of our simply biblical ‘Pavarotti offer’.

The word is spreading, wise men are talking and it’s even getting to the point where bookings are becoming necessary, which is utterly MAD!

“BUT WHY?” we don’t hear anyone scream

Well, loyal disciples of Love Shack, simply put, we’re offering properly decent food at a price designed get ya out and about, mixing and mingling on your lunch, rather than heading to buy a s**tty dry sandwich from a supermarket.

Our Pavarotti offer is any dish, a coffee and a dessert for just a ‘TENOR’. (£10)

Madness when most places are offering something s**tty for way above that alone.

- Mushroom Tom Kha with yuzu ponzu lotus root and noodles (GF) (£6.5 on its own)

- Kimcheese toastie with a f**k load of pickles (£7.5 on its own)
