At 14, Dad told me “No more pocket money for you son – you’re coming to work in the shop with me.” And that was that. I never planned to spend my life running a cafe but my Dad had me on what was effectively the longest running YTS training scheme in history!
I started as a Saturday boy, learning the ropes, meeting all the locals and getting to know the characters that made Terry’s what it was. 30 years later, I’ve come to realise that I didn’t choose this business, it chose me.
Has there been hardship over the years? Absolutely. But there have been so many good friends and memories made too.
Terry’s Cafe was never just a business, it was Dad’s legacy and along the way it became mine.

Meet Billie.
Her family have been coming to Terry’s for three generations, starting with her grandad Bill, who I remember like it was yesterday. Then her mum, dad, aunts and uncles. Now Billie’s working with us full time in the cafe, with the occasional shift next door at the Bar & Grill pouring pints and making cocktails.
There’s a little bit of Cafe Confidential for you. The people and families who’ve been coming through our doors for years, and the next generation becoming part of the team.
Giving local people opportunities is something we’re proud of. We’re fully staffed at the moment, but we’re always happy to hear from talented people who’d like to work with us. Send us a DM and introduce yourself.

A little Sunday morning throwback with Jesse Burgess and Will Warr from TOPJAW outside Terry’s Cafe!
From starting at Terry’s aged 14 to spending over 30 years in hospitality, there’s been plenty of stories along the way.
Those experiences inspired my book, Cafe Confidential, a behind-the-scenes look at family, food, London life and the realities of running a traditional British café.

How did the book come about? It started with lockdown, a sausage roll and a kids’ ring light from Argos.
2020 with businesses on the brink, we improvised. Takeaways. Tables outside. Paper plates. B**r pump. Music. We pushed our luck. We got lots of emergency service workers coming in regularly, so we were genuinely providing a service. Then Trading Standards shut us down.
So I started filming myself cooking (and sometimes dancing) in the kitchen instead. One sausage roll, thousands of views. Then followed Fish & Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, Liver & Bacon, Breakfasts etc.
The videos took off, people started asking “have you written a cookbook… ?”, and eventually, over a cup of tea at the cafe, I signed a book deal.
Not just a cookbook. The stories, characters, chaos, laughs, tears and graft that make up life in a traditional British cafe.

The Billingsgate weekend in review.
This lovely couple started with half a dozen Carlingford oysters, followed by diver-caught scallops three ways: Café de Paris butter, garlic & herb with panko, and chorizo. Absolutely divine.
Then came the pièce de résistance: New England lobster rolls in toasted brioche.
The lady went for a pint of Black Velvet, made with London Black and Crémant de Limoux. The gentleman went for a Diet Coke!
And a little context for the start of the video: the gentleman was part of a shoot that was getting in the way of service, hence my bluntness. We had hungry guests to look after!
Friday and Saturday were an immense success. Thanks to everyone who joined us. We’re already looking forward to next year.

Reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain made me realise I’d been trying to make Terry’s into something it wasn’t - it just needed to be more Terry’s.
Early mornings. Good food. Regulars. Hard work and plenty of banter.

Dogs of Instagram, meet Rocco and Stella.
Rocco is our eight-year-old Shih Tzu cross Patterdale Terrier, and he’s about as chilled as a dog can be.
We’ve recently welcomed Stella into the pack—a 14-week-old Patterdale Terrier cross Welsh Collie. It’s fair to say she hasn’t developed Rocco’s good manners just yet, but they’ll come. She’s only a baby!
Well-behaved dogs are always welcome at Terry’s—even if our own Stella doesn’t quite meet the criteria yet.
