What people say
De Hems Dutch Cafe Bar (the official) is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the rich history and culture of the Dutch community in London. With a pedigree dating back to the 17th century, this pub has played an important role in the city's social scene for centuries. The pub takes its name from a Dutch seaman who bought it in 1890, and since then, it has been a popular gathering place for the Dutch community and the Dutch Resistance during World War II.
One of the most interesting aspects of De Hems is its connection to music history. In the 1960s, it was a popular haunt for music business insiders, and it was said that you could buy your way into the charts at their old Oyster Bar. More recently, De Hems hosted a comedy club called Oranje Boom-Boom Cabaret, which included the debut of The Mighty Boosh.
Despite its long and storied past, De Hems remains relevant today as a famous institution in London's West End. Specialising in Dutch and Belgian beers, this pub offers an authentic taste of Holland right in the heart of London. Whether you're looking to enjoy a pint with friends or learn more about Dutch culture and history, De Hems is definitely worth a visit. So head on over to Macclesfield Street and experience all that this iconic pub has to offer!
