It’s easy to feel guilty about having fun.

There’s always another email to answer. Another job to finish. Another news story to worry about. Another reason to tell ourselves we’ll relax when things calm down.
The trouble is, they rarely do.
School holidays and this extended period of hot weather have reminded me of something I’d almost forgotten.
Fun isn’t a distraction from life.
It’s part of life.
A bike ride with Boo.
Swimming in the sea.
Gelato that melts faster than you can eat it.
Laughing and sharing stories with strangers in a café.
Watching Barnaby do his involuntary paddling in the sea.
None of these moments solve the world’s problems.
But they can help quietly solve something in us.
The world seems a little chaotic at the moment. There are plenty of voices competing for our attention, telling us what we should fear, argue about or fix next.
That’s all the more reason to make room for joy.
Not because we’re ignoring reality.
Because joy gives us the strength to face it.
Children understand this instinctively. Summer holidays aren’t simply a break from learning. They’re full of exploration, scraped knees, new friendships, getting lost, trying things for the first time and discovering the world a little more each day.
Perhaps adults need that just as much.
This weekend, give yourself permission to just have a little fun.
Go somewhere different.
Say yes to an invitation.
Have the extra scoop of gelato.
Play a game outside.
Swim.
Ride a bike.
Take the scenic route home.
Mooch through the markets.
Life isn’t measured only by what we accomplish.
It’s also measured by the moments that make us laugh.

Funny how the smallest moments often leave the deepest footprints.

This week I’ve been reminded that a good life is rarely built from big moments.
It’s built from little ones.
A bike ride with Boo. An unexpected conversation with an old friend. Sunshine and coffee in the garden. Taking a deep breath instead of rushing straight to the next thing.
I also attended (remotely) the funeral of the mother of one of my oldest and dearest friends.
As he spoke, I found myself thinking back nearly forty years to the first weekend I stayed at their house as a slightly awkward fifteen-year-old on leave from boarding school.
His mum didn’t do anything spectacular.
She welcomed me. She listened. She made me feel like I belonged.
I’d forgotten about that weekend for years.
But all those years later, I remembered how it made me feel: seen, welcomed and part of something much bigger.
It made me wonder how many tiny moments like that we create without ever knowing.
A kind word.
A friendly invitation.
A cuppa.
Recognising and remembering somebody from years before.
Taking a genuine interest.
On their own they seem almost insignificant.
But over a lifetime they stack quietly together, until one day someone stands up and acknowledges their life was better because you were in it.
Perhaps that’s what we’re really leaving behind.
Not achievements.
Not names in gold on the board.
Not shiny things.
Just the way we made people feel.
