Save Gaby's Deli

Save Gaby's Deli Gaby's Deli, a deli and restaurant located on Charing Cross Road, was facing the possibility of being closed down. The landlord, the Marquess of Salisbury, had plans to redevelop the site into a chain restaurant, despite Gaby's desire to stay. In contradiction to their own planning strategy and officers' advice, the Westminster Council granted planning permission for the conversion of four properties into a restaurant, which would result in a reduction of retail space. Gascoyne Holdings, the Marquess's company, offered Gaby a "Tenant at Will" contract that could potentially result in eviction with only four weeks' notice starting from August 31st 2012. Despite feeling compelled to sign this agreement, Gaby expressed dissatisfaction and still hoped for a reversal of the decision in order to be granted a new long-term lease. Supporters who valued London's variety and cherished Gaby's Deli as a unique dining experience in the West End continued their campaign. Sadly, it is with regret that we must inform you that Gaby's Deli has been permanently closed.

Sad news for those who loved Gaby’s Deli and still miss it nearly five years after it closed.

Gaby died on Sunday after quite a long decline.

He leaves his wife and three children.

The Save Gaby’s Deli campaigners wish the family long life and the happiest of memories.

And we have so many memories of Gaby, his felafel and salt beef, his welcome and wisdom, his claim to bringing both felafel and the cappuccino machine to London in the 60s, his signed theatre posters and pictures (destined for the V&A maybe?)

This page was going to close down in the near future. But the family would like it open as a memorial and so they can post some of the wonderful pictures from the deli. So be it.

Thank you for all the support

Haven't done this for ages but Refugees at Home is just opening up to new referrals and so needs London hosts.

Can you help?

Or just share and comment?

EAST LONDON? but GROUND FLOOR.

Anyone have ideas where this female refugee might find somewhere to stay?

It looks like Gaby’s Deli may close at the end of October 2018. The Marquess is putting the rent up and not offering longer than a year’s lease.

The staff are anguished if course - some have been there for years and years.

This page manager only heard yesterday and hasn’t spoken to Gaby himself yet.

Bit of a twitter storm on

In case Gaby’s customers can help (and because am going there for felafel tonight.

OK, there may not be many Gaby's Deli people in Manchester. But would hate for them to miss out just for not knowing....

What people say

Save Gaby's Deli is a beloved deli and restaurant located on Charing Cross Road in London. This iconic establishment is facing the threat of closure as the landlord, the Marquess of Salisbury, plans to redevelop the site into a chain restaurant. However, Gaby's Deli has been fighting to stay and has garnered support from their MP, customers, and neighbors.

Despite receiving planning permission from Westminster Council to convert four properties into a restaurant, it is important to note that this decision contradicts their own planning strategy and officers' advice. The Marquess has offered Gaby a "Tenant at Will" contract, which would only be enforced against him after August 31st, 2012. This means that he could potentially be evicted with just four weeks' notice and no redress. Such uncertainty makes it incredibly challenging for Gaby to run his business and retain staff.

While the Marquess believes that Gaby is content with this arrangement, it is clear that he signed the agreement out of necessity rather than satisfaction. Gaby still hopes for a reversal of the decision and the opportunity to secure a new long-term lease that would allow his establishment to continue serving its loyal customers.

The campaign to save Gaby's Deli highlights the importance of preserving London's variety and unique dining experiences in the West End. This deli holds a special place in many people's hearts, offering delicious food and creating cherished memories for locals and visitors alike.

It is crucial for us to support Save Gaby's Deli in their fight against closure. By standing together, we can send a powerful message to the Marquess of Salisbury that this historic establishment deserves its rightful place in London's culinary landscape. Let us rally behind Gaby's Deli and ensure that future generations can enjoy its exceptional food and warm hospitality for years to come.
