Why We Need The Bell.
Why do we need a pub, you ask?
Well, that’s an easy tale —
It isn’t just to sit all night
And drink another b**r.
We need a place where doors are wide,
Where everybody’s known,
Where you can wander in yourself
But never feel alone.
And that’s exactly what we’ve got
At our old local Bell,
A place for friends and neighbours
And a hundred tales to tell.
It’s where we mark the birthdays,
And raise a glass to life,
Where someone brings their husband,
Or introduces the wife.
It’s wedding cheers and football tears,
It’s laughter at the bar,
It’s putting all the world to rights —
And getting nowhere far!
It’s “Fancy one?” and “How’ve you been?”
And “Blimey, it’s been years!”
It’s meeting up with old friends
Over memories and b**rs.
It’s knowing when you’ve had a day
That’s really gone to hell,
There’ll be a friendly face or two
Waiting at The Bell.
For Leytonstone’s not only streets,
Or houses standing tall,
A community needs somewhere
That brings together all.
Somewhere the young meet with the old,
Where strangers become mates,
Where no one needs an invite,
You simply walk through the gates.
So why do we need our local pub?
I think the answer’s clear:
We need a place to share our lives,
Our laughter and our cheer.
For bricks and b**r don’t make a pub,
It’s people who do that well —
And that’s what makes a local home.
That’s what makes The Bell.
