Kind words from Jack Lo
Sunday roast at The Garibaldi
61 Albert St, AL1 1RT
6th August 2023
A characteristic Victorian Fullers pub tucked towards the end of Albert Street and within short walk of the White Hart Tap, The Hare and Hounds, The White Lion, The Goat Inn and the Bee Hive.
The Garibaldi Inn is shown on an 1876 Ordinance Survey map of the local area.
It is also widely recognised that Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 – 1882), the Italian patriot stayed at nearby Cliveden House in 1864. So it is likely the Garibaldi was founded sometime between 1864 and 1876. Prior to this one of the houses up the road was reputed to have been the local pub.
£13⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Chicken breast, skinless, tender and moist.
Potatoes ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
First roast lunch I’ve had where roast potatoes were complemented by mash. Both quite nice. Only two roasties, par boiled and lightly roasted and grilled.
Yorkshire pudding⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Nondescript but good.
Vegetables ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
White Cabbage
Carrots
Peas
Gravy/sauce ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Good.
Service:
Warm, friendly.
Atmosphere:
The Garibaldi is one of those traditional, classic pubs that are dotted around St Albans. A mix of the old; antique displays of local history with the new; several large screens for sports on the walls. My experience today was relaxed and easy going, sat outside with the rare opportunity to soak up some August sun.
15/25
Conclusion:
A Sunday roast that did what it said on the menu. A balanced meal of meat and three veg, cooked and presented well. A couple of potatoes and gravy to boot..
