While we are all living through this huge protein craze at the moment, I think we’ve forgotten something important.

Protein metabolism actually creates a lot of oxidative stress and free radicals in the body, especially when eaten in excess or under chronic stress. Meanwhile, nourishing carbohydrates are much gentler from that perspective and are deeply supportive for the nervous system, hormones, vitality, and longevity.

We’ve been playing with some traditional Ayurvedic desserts lately, and they truly feel like medicine disguised as something sweet. Today it’s carrot halva – we like to think of it as “retinol in a bowl.” It’s made with slow-cooked carrots, almond milk, jaggery (a sugarcane-based sweetener that is unrefined and naturally rich in minerals like calcium and iron), ghee (considered the elixir of life in Ayurveda and a builder of ojas), cardamom and saffron. It’s deeply nourishing, grounding, and wonderful for the skin, digestion, and winter energy.
