After Glow is a collection of new paintings by Taylor Silk and the beginning of a project still finding its feet.
Made using enamel paint on found wood and salvaged materials, these works explore fashion, s*x work, desire and the ways women have shaped culture from the edges rather than the centre. Looking across the Venetian Renaissance, Victorian England and the present day, the paintings follow small histories that often get left out of the official story.
I’m interested in the people who influenced how we live, dress and move through the world without ever being recognised for it. The women who worked, performed, survived, invented styles, created trends and quietly changed culture from the margins.
Lately, the past feels closer than ever. As q***r lives become increasingly politicised and old prejudices return dressed up as common sense, history keeps finding ways to interrupt the present. The more I read, the less distant these stories feel.
The paintings are made on reclaimed wood because I like materials that have already lived a life. Scratches, dents, old paint and weathering become part of the image. I don’t want things to feel perfect. The evidence of a hand, a mistake or a previous history is often the most beautiful part.
This exhibition is a work in progress. An attempt to follow a thread. A collection of paintings about beauty, labour, fashion, longing and resistance, and about the people who leave a mark on the world without always being remembered for it.
