Mothers Day 2022

Been thinking a LOT about ancestry lately.

The lives of those that came before me and the influence they have on my soul, spirit and by extension everything I do, which of course includes handcrafting the organic chocolates many of you enjoy.

The two women above were, and are anchors to my lineage and play no small role in the person I am today.

The first is my Great-Great Grandmother, Ms. Mary Kearney..or just "Granny". She was born in 1869 in South Carolina, just four years after the Civil War ended and 13th amendment abolished slavery in the US. She lived through the ‘Jim Crow’ era of legalised segregation and passed away in 1953.

Granny delivered my mother, Katie, her Great Grand daughter and two of my aunts (Bettie and Linda). The second photo is Mary’s daughter, Ms. Francis Mellon, my Great Grandmother, affectionately known as ‘Big Mama’. She was born in 1898 (-1971).

I never met either of these beautiful women in person..only in spirit.

Now, as you can certainly tell from the photos, these women meant business, there was no messing about. When they spoke, you listened. Period.

Our ancestors actually never stop speaking to us and on this Mothers Day…Granny and Big Mama might want a word with you…so listen closely….

It’s taken two very long weeks to write this.

Two weeks ago today, as I was having dinner with Nikolas I noticed that I had two calls and a text message from an unrecognised number. The messenger said she’d looked for me at Stokey market but I’d already gone.

I returned the call and then sat in stunned disbelief with every word.

The last two days I’d done something I’d never done before…wait to hear back from Angel.

I’d sent a message to him on the Thursday about the weekend markets.

No response.

The next day, the day before market day, I messaged again: ‘Are you ok?’

Again silence.

Angel NEVER took time to respond. Not once in the 6+ years that he worked with me selling across markets did he take more than a couple of hours to respond. 99% of the time it was minutes. His responsiveness was one of the many remarkable things about him.

I listened and heard how at some point in the previous week he passed away. I had to have that repeated back to me several times. No way. I was, and am stunned. Nikolas caught the conversation, and we had a very emotional discussion afterwards. He got to know Angel quite well over the years. I was touched when he spoke about his sadness and added ’your team is like family’.

No one yet knows what happened but apparently it didn’t look suspicious. The autopsy has not yet been filed.

My heart aches.

Angel was special. Reliable, honest and a dear friend. He turned up on Saturday mornings for pre-market proceedings with the same wry smile and bouncy nature every week. He was conscientious, it really mattered to him.

Now his mother is in London on an unplanned trip from their home in Bulgaria. A trip no parent even wants to contemplate. I plan to meet with her. I met her once before and we communicated through smiles, chocolates and gratitude for our common bond, Angel. The next time I see her it will be with heavy hearts. I fill up with emotion every time I think of her loss. But I will also give her a giant hug and share the kind words other have passed through me about her son.

We will have sympathy cards at each of our market stalls this weekend for anyone who would like to share condolences w his mother.

It's about the people.

In all my years making chocolates on two continents I've had the good fortune to work with countless wonderful people.

And there is no more critical role than the people who represent my life's passion to the rest of the world...or in this case our local farmers' market.
So here's lovely Kaeridwyn at today's market.

She had our best day thus far this year. In fact, she sold out of a number of our chocolates.

Originally from western Canada, she now lives in Clapton, East London. She's a musician, actor and has in the past led chocolate tours. She enjoys cooking and baking in her spare time. She is also quite the world traveller.

K is super friendly with a warm smile and joyful laugh.

Her favourite Niko B. Chocolate? Sour Apple salted caramel and our raspberry burnt caramel hearts.

In this time of lockdowns, distancing, extreme uncertainty, broken routines, broken circumstances, and flat-out loneliness it’s more important than ever to extend ourselves to others if we have the capacity to do so.

13 Years ago today on 6 Jan 2008..at nearly midnight ABSOLUTELY everything changed.

In a room, at the University of California Pacific Heights Medical Center, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and Pacific Ocean, you arrived and I nearly passed out…

The change that came over me with your birth was from the inside out. I thought I knew love, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was most important, I thought I understood the meaning of sacrifice, I thought I knew myself…I had no idea. None.

In the years since, you have made me a better person and a better man.

I didn’t sleep for that first year…fell downstairs in the middle of the night to get to your bedside and over the years I learned. Learned how to listen better, how to laugh more, how to thread the needle between challenging and consoling..and when to apply some good ole ‘tough love’. But mostly I learned the true meaning of humility and accountability. Doing my best to be your best and falling up along the way.

Laughing together and celebrating the good and holding your hand and putting my arm around you always.

Its been a hard year with this crazy pandemic and disruption to life, including your school year. But, man, you have handled it all so well. Kept up with your school work, learned new ways to keep in touch with your friends. And with the extra time together Ive watched you grow so much emotionally and physically (Dude, is that really the beginning of a moustache? Lol). The morning runs and afternoon basketball games followed by our ‘life talks’, along with the time in the kitchen together making pancakes (roasted banana and chocolate…yum!), creative dinners or granola have been the real silver lining to this twilight zone of a year.

I’m really proud of you…and proud to be your dad.

Celebrating 2020...

We made it!

And...

We introduced our newest salted caramel...

Pear & Ginger

This one caught me by surprise. I really wasn't sure I'd be able to match reality with the vision. I could envisage this working in a salted caramel...sweet, mildly tart pear and warming ginger. But wasn't sure I would be able to draw enough pear flavour over the sweet complexity of caramelized sugar as pears are naturally subtle.

We start with fresh organic pear juice and fresh ginger cooked down to a near syrup. We add this with ginger powder to our salted caramel base...and...yum!

It required a few tweaks but by the 3rd iteration Pear & Ginger became one of our most sought after salted caramels.

So 2020 has that going for it :)
