You lot know me well enough by now…
So it’s time for some real, REAL talk…
I’m the first to moan about a water leak at 2am, the skyrocketing cost of a pint, or the latest government "initiative" designed to make our lives harder. 😫
I’ve built a brand, of sorts, out of being the Grumpy Landlord.
It’s a role I play well, and, let’s be honest, this industry gives us plenty to be grumpy about!
But today, the mask is slipping a bit. 😔
The truth is, being "grumpy" is sometimes the easiest way to hide being totally and utterly exhausted! 😓
This industry, whether you’re running a small village pub or a portfolio of 10 city centre bars, is relentless. 🥵
It’s 80 hour weeks. It’s carrying everyone else’s problems on your shoulders while you’re worrying about your own overheads. 📈
It’s smiling for the customers when you’ve got nothing left in the tank yourself. 🎭
I’ll be honest with you: I struggle sometimes.
I live with depression.
The dark cloud that appears when you want it least, that overshadows everything else you should be feeling, everything else you WANT to be feeling.
It’s not something that’s always there, but it is an ominous shadow that follows me.
Some mornings, the "Grumpy Landlord" doesn't want to get out of bed. 🛌
Some days, the weight of looking after everyone else feels like it’s crushing my chest. 😰
We talk about the "hard work" and the "graft" like they’re badges of honour. 🎖️
But we don’t talk enough about the cost. 💸
We don’t talk about the quiet moments when the doors are locked and the lights are off, and you’re sat there wondering how you’re going to do it all again tomorrow. 😰
If you’re feeling like that today, just know:
YOU ARE NOT ALONE! ❤️
I’m right there with you.
We’re a tough bunch in this trade, but being tough doesn’t mean you have to be made of stone. 🗿
We need to look out for each other. 🫂
If you see a fellow landlord, a publican, or a colleague who seems a bit quieter than usual, don't just ask "how's business?”…
Ask how they are.
Ask how they ACTUALLY are!
The industry is hard. The world is heavy. But we’ve got each other’s backs. ❤️
The Grumpy Landlord might be back to moaning about business rates or VAT or National Insurance tomorrow, but today, I’m just a bloke telling you it’s okay not to be okay!
