Le Gavroche Le Gavroche, a classic French restaurant, first opened its doors in 1967. With two Michelin stars and renowned Chef Patron Michel Roux Junior at the helm, it quickly became a popular destination for fine dining in Upper Brook Street. Serving lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, Le Gavroche offered an exquisite menu that showcased the best of French cuisine.

In August 2023, Le Gavroche announced on social media that they were looking for individuals to join their team for the final chapter before closure in January 2024. They sought a skilled Barman/Sommelier who had a passion for wine and spirits and could contribute to creating an unforgettable last few months for the restaurant. Interested applicants were encouraged to send their CV and cover letter to [email protected] with the subject line "Last Chapter Team".

Before closing its doors, the restaurant took a moment to celebrate Joao, their kitchen porter extraordinaire, who had been with them for an impressive 34 years. Joao was described as part of the family at Le Gavroche and had witnessed numerous elite chefs pass through its kitchen throughout his tenure. Despite his humble role, Joao's involvement extended far beyond just being a kitchen porter.

Unfortunately, Le Gavroche has permanently closed its doors.

Just a few hours left to bid on our notable lots that include the iconic street urchin painting from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, hung prominently in the restaurant since its inception in 1967, alongside the illuminated Le Gavroche restaurant sign. The guestbook, across two volumes, contains over 500 signatures from acclaimed visitors over the years including Charlie Chaplin, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, and Barbra Streisand among others. Other lots include porcelain objects, silver-plated Champagne buckets, a porcelain part dinner-service, glassware, and a lifetime collection of cookery books, ranging from rare editions to modern signed texts from the Library of Albert Roux OBE.

Happy birthday Joao, our kitchen porter extraordinaire, 34 years with us, and definitely part of the family. 🎂🎉

‘As the longest-serving member of staff after Chef Michel, Joao has seen numerous elite chefs pass through the Gavroche kitchen. When asked what’s kept him in the job so long, he replies: ‘Good people, good boss’. He might throw his hands skywards claiming he’s ‘just the KP’, but Joao has become part of the fabric at Le Gavroche. No doubt his involvement extends far beyond his role of KP, but he’s far too humble to take claim.’
