Using some basic GCSE maths to do with radiuses, circumstances and most importantly (pizza) pi, I figured out that for double the price of a 12 inch pizzas, you get 2.3x the surface area with our giant 18 inch pizzas in Putney, mine blowing isn't it?!
These are only available in Putney (and Richmond when we manage to get some ideas when we might open again), Barnes unfortunately just doesn't have the space to make them.
I would highly suggest popping down to Putney tonight from 7pm for one, because I'll be bringing my trio down featuring and Seb De Krom to play some of the Sonny Rollins trio songbook in his memory, seems the stars have aligned for you if you've managed to read this far without nodding off eh?!

Tonight is the first of our weekly live music nights at Base Face Putney, and I'm so pleased to be bringing my Dad, Neal Thornton, down to whet it's head with a lovely piano trio featuring myself Tim Thornton on bass and Tom Hooper on drums!
We'll be playing from 7-9pm at Base Face Putney, no cover charge, great pizza, great drinks, great way to spend your Wednesday!
No stranger to live music in pizzerias, my Dad had a residency at the Soho Pizzeria on Beak Street from before I was born in the late 80s until it closed in 2011, one of the longest running residencies I've ever heard of!
I would go down and join them on stage from my early teenage years and him and his bandmates were hugely responsible for my introduction to the world of music on that smokey little stage.
We were lucky to spend the next 10 years touring the world together with the great Julian Bliss band, until COVID changed the direction of my career...

Weekly live jazz, no cover charge, every Wednesday 7-9pm at Base Face Pizza Putney from Tim Thornton & friends.
Hi! 👋 I'm Tim Thornton, owner and founder of Base Face Pizza. I was a touring jazz bassist (that's why we're called Base Face. Like Bass Face... Get it?!) until COVID struck and took all the gigs away, so I started making pizza for charity from a little Ooni oven on my driveway.
Cut to 6 years later and Base Face Pizza has evolved into 3 restaurants across SW London (we're hoping our Richmond site might get back open very soon!), and it's time to swap pizza base for double bass again and get the music rolling, so I'm bringing my favourite musicians down to our Putney pizzeria every Wednesday night!

Friday night is coming.... And we want to say thank you for all of you showing up and choosing us for your Friday night treat! It means the world to see it!
The last couple of Fridays have been mental in Barnes and Putney, some advice as we approach Friday evening, if you don't want to wait for pizza, call the shop and pre-order, and come and pick your pizzas up before 6.30!
Please understand we're doing our absolute best to feed as many of you as possible, please remain kind to all our staff, please don't leave us 1* reviews for making you wait, do you really think we'd do that just to annoy you?! It's because if we were to feed you immediately, someone else who already ordered would have to wait!
Thanks in advance for your understanding, what we can assure you is that we'll make sure when you do get your pizza it'll be the best one we can possibly make!

I need some help deciding something for next month's special, Sandwich Vs. Pizza... Give me your feedback!
We've got a super fresh special coming for the arrival of the sun, I tested it as a sandwich with mortadella, stracciatella and pistacchio pesto, and as a pizza with a mozzarella base, mortadella, stracciatella and pistacchio pesto..
Personally I love it as a sandwich, it's a bit lighter given that you don't have the melted mozzarella that is on the pizza, and that also keeps it fresher, but I'm concerned that putting a sandwich on as a special will put people off ordering it as it maybe doesn't sound like a proper meal as much as a pizza does. It is exactly the same amount of dough as a pizza and toppings (minus the melted mozzarella...)
So here are your 3 options:
1. Mortazza Sandwich
2. Mortazza Pizza
3. Both! (This has the potential to annoy the chefs, beware!)

Still no update on a Richmond re-opening but as soon as I have any info I'll share it with you...

Richmond pizzeria update - the closure continues but we're not intending on leaving!
I've been getting a tonne of messages about the closure in Richmond, so I thought worth doing a public update. The issue is that a structural issue in the building has meant our basement has been flooded for weeks now, to the point we can't operate at the moment. The people responsible for fixing it are dragging their feet (shock horror)...
We still have no definitive answer as to what needs to be done, and how long it will take, so I can't give you any answer as to when we'll be able to reopen unfortunately.
As soon as I have any news I'll share it with you all and we hope to bring you some tasty pizzas again soon once the basement is back in good shape.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this but it's been completely out of our hands and an incredibly damaging and frustrating situation for us to deal with.
For now Barnes and Putney are marching on though so give them a visit if you're hungry!

The Hardcore Prawn 🦐 🦐 🦐
Prawns on pizza, not easy to do! Their subtle flavour is easily lost and they can get dry and rubbery so easily, so it took quite a bit of experimentation for us to get to a really good prawn pizza, full prawn taste and juicy prawns!
Marinated in our house garlic butter (the same one we use for our best selling crust dip), even more garlic, and chilli, with some pops of sweet semi dry tomatoes, mozzarella, tomato and basil.
Whilst I have your attention, there is unfortunately no good update on Richmond, we're still closed the until further notice and in discussions with the landlord to seek some sort of solution, but Putney and Barnes are carrying on as normal so pop down there if you need a pizza!

Yesterday myself (Tim) and my ops manager Graeme had the pleasure of going down and giving a talk to the second group of trainees on the .wk programme, run by Bridget and Laurence from
What is the Nourish programme you might ask? Well here's what it is in their own words... 👇 👇 👇
"Nourish is a trauma-informed, holistic hospitality training programme providing a pathway to employment for young adults facing multiple barriers to independence.
Over 15 months, we combine skills training with sustained employment support, equipping young people with both the technical hospitality skills and life management capabilities needed to secure and sustain meaningful work or training.
Our approach recognises that young people facing complex challenges need comprehensive support that addresses underlying barriers alongside building professional capability."
We spoke to them about our individual stories in the hospitality world, what hiring looks like from the perspective of a business and what we look out for when recruiting for any role from junior to senior, and part time to full time.
We have actually hired one of the first cohort they trained who is working with us now as a trainee chef in our Putney pizzeria, and it is incredible to see the work they're doing in helping people find their way into a career in the hospitality industry, which can be tough but also incredibly rewarding if you're the right person for the job!

The cheeky pineapple with all new cupping pepperoni...
They've been working on a pepperoni that pops up into little cups when it cooks, winking at you with a pool of delicious pepperoni oil, and it hits the spot with our award winning cheeky pineapple with pineapple jam made in house and fresh jalapenos on a base of tomato and mozzarella. Haaave ya met Sofia?
She's the boss in Richmond Base Face, capable of doing the work of 3 people, world record holder for the most packs of pizza boxes carried at once, she can serve tables in between jumping into the kitchen and whipping a few pizzas into the oven, always with a great attitude, a smile and a laugh, is there anything she can't do?! If there is we haven't found it yet!

Always testing, tweaking, improving... 🍕🍕🍕
Once you get into it pizza making is a deep dark hole that sucks you in and there's no way out, you can't stop fiddling, trying to make the recipe better, and I love it.
One of the frustrating things about it is every test batch you make takes 2 or 3 days until you can try it, so you spend ages waiting to see if your latest tweak gives the improvement you're looking for... Patience is key. We've been working through a lot of different tweaks over the past few months in Putney with head chef Antonio, great fun when it works and frustrating when it doesn't! That's the joy of working with dough though, it's living, breathing and always changing.
All our dough is made on each site daily by our chefs, and well fermented before it reaches you for a digestible and delicious pizza

Pistacchio clotted cream tiramisu
We make our tiramisu with the finest Cornish clotted cream instead of mascarpone, where possible we use local ingredients and when developing the menu I thought clotted cream filled a similar culinary space in the British food world as mascarpone does in Italy, so why not develop our own British tiramisu?
Here's a bunch of BTS of making up a big batch for all 3 sites, including some creamy ASMR and a little chef snack to test it was all good... We dip the biscuits in milk for the pistachio tiramisu unlike our classic one so anyone looking to avoid caffeine is safe with this one!

The Friar Tuck
Friarielli, burrata, pecorino, mozzarella and tomato
So named because the whole burrata with friarielli around it reminded me of Friar Tucks head...
We've had a lot of requests for tomato based veggie pizzas and seeing as January is a time when many are cutting down their meat consumption we came up with this beauty!

Starters & Sharers
Have you had a chance to try any of our new starters and sharers section on the menu yet? We added a load of delicious menu items to kick off your meal in style!
We have a beautiful charcuterie selection with fennel salami, coppa and soppressata which comes with our house made giardiniera (mixed pickled veg) to cut through the meats and a couple of mini dough sticks.
We also have a gorgeous radicchio salad with honey, walnuts, Stilton and balsamic, we have garlic prawns cooked to order in our famous Base Face garlic butter, a cheesy garlic flatbread, and a burrata salad with semi-dried tomatoes and basil.
