Just some thoughts while summer is still here…..Growing up I didn’t like cooking, didn’t come naturally, wasn’t interested. Only really knew I loved eating Sri Lankan food…..never once tried to cook it. Left that to mum and dad…and to my aunties and uncles at those family gatherings. They did it so well, there wasn’t any need to try! Then when I got older, I wanted to celebrate being Sri Lankan, and what better way than by sharing what has to be the best cuisine in the world (ok I may be biased 😉😂)

But isn’t it so darn annoying that Sri Lankan cuisine is still so underrepresented on the shelves! You can eat a great Sri Lankan curry in a London restaurant, but can you cook it at home? Do you have the many, many, spices needed? Do you have the patience to weigh those out separately, to make sure it’s all carefully balanced. Do you know the right recipe to work with those spices. To make it just right?

Well that’s the story behind why I do what I do…with the help of my amazing mum, who really has got a gift for all things spices…..I’ve been able to produce authentic and original Sri Lankan blends with recipes attached that mean…..yes….you don’t need to be a cook to make Sri Lankan curries, you just need to follow a recipe, use our blends, and you have proper good Sri Lankan curry, from my home to yours!

When I first tried my mums curry powders, frankly I was blown away, because it really did mean I could do it….I could cook curries exactly like those I ate growing up! And that means the world to me, and to my kids, and I hope that when you try our blends, it means the world to you too ❤️❤️❤️

Amazing to see how Food Writer | Podcaster | Photographer | Ranji Thangiah has been using our spices!

• Food Writer | Podcaster | Photographer | Ranji Thangiah The Tooting Mama test kitchen has been busy.

I’ve been creating a whole batch of new Sri Lankan recipes the kind to see you through summer and into autumn. And I think you’re going to love them.

Mango acharu & feta salad. Fresh mango pickle, sweet and spicy with a dash of lime, folded through feta, tomatoes, cucumber and salad leaves. Divine.

Chickpea sundal, the nifty little number you’ll want in your back pocket. Chickpeas fried in spices with lots of shredded coconut. It’s a Sri Lankan street food snack, but I’ve been serving it up at my summer barbecues.

Roasted aubergine raita. I know raita isn’t strictly Sri Lankan. But roasted aubergine topped with tempered onions, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and spices, laid onto full-fat Greek yoghurt and scattered with pomegranate? Now that takes the summer dip to another level.

And a lamb & aubergine curry, inspired by one I had at Rambutan and loved so much I had to know I could make it whenever I wanted. I’ve been testing it with my bestie, Rosh’s very own Hop & Roll roasted Sri Lankan curry powder. And dang, it’s good.

If you want these recipes dropping into your inbox, make sure you’re signed up to my newsletter. You know where the link is!
