The central job for this trip is strumming the farm. The grasses are above the knee and once they dry on a few weeks as the summer hits they become a huge fire risk. Strumming it all creates cover for the soil to help it hold moisture and protect the delicate flora of those first 6 inches. It’s hot and physically demanding work. But somehow Bruno still manages to save the wild orchids and all the wild oregano we will harvest before we come back. Working with nature is a much more time consuming method but well worth it.

Buona Notte from Calabria! Huge first day! Bruno strimmed for 6 hours straight while I enjoyed the AC preparing to welcome 5 intrepid souls joining us on Friday to roll up their (short) sleeves and get to work. The plunge pool is filling slowly, the fridge is stocked with Rosé & beer. I’ll show you how the olive trees are doing tomorrow. Sweet dreams from paradise!

This is a photo from the end of the fist wave of covid. It was to remind our customers what our faces looked like under the masks. That we were smiling even if you couldn’t see it. Looking back at that time now I don’t know how we survived. And now looking back at the 3 years getting West Dulwich rolling I’m shocked again. We are now turning our attention back to the origins. There is now a mini kitchen back in Tulse Hill. We will be cooking there Friday - Sunday come mid June. You will be able to sit and enjoy a coffee and breakfast/brunch/lunch in Tulse Hill’s friendliest cafe. We look forward to this next chapter and appreciate each and every one of you.

Bruno is racing through the olive grove today spraying the trees with a serum of sorts to strengthen the fruit set. Agriculture is brutal - we invest more hours every year but nature makes the call about the harvest. Looks promising so far so check your calendars for mid October if you want to join us!

Bruno is back on the farm checking in on how the rainiest winter in decades has affected the trees. He’ll be treating them to strengthen the chances that all the pollination will result in a lasting fruit set. At the end of May we head back with 5 customers and not long after that we’ll have details about the October trip.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chiara - this is wonderful wine maker carrying on her family legacy. She speaks of each of her wines like they are movie stars. Each with their own talents and personality. You’ve probably enjoyed a Montelpuciano as a red wine before - easy and quaffable. Here it is vinified as a vibrant rose so we serve it chilled. Enjoy it and celebrate the arrival of spring. Our wine of the week.

What people say

Il Sovrano London, located in Tulse Hill, is a deli that offers an exceptional culinary experience. The owners of this family business are passionate about their craft and it shows in every aspect of their operation. They take great care to source the finest ingredients from trusted suppliers, such as Elderflower, and even harvest some themselves, like the wild oregano they use in their dishes.

Their commitment to quality is evident in the way they treat each ingredient with care and attention. For example, every tray of focaccia is given a deep tissue olive oil massage before being served. And when their beloved team member Matheus left after a year of service, they expressed how much he had become like family.

Il Sovrano London's dedication to excellence extends beyond just their ingredients and staff. They keep their customers informed about changes in their offerings, such as switching to a new Puglian source for olive oil due to a lack of Calabrian harvests. And despite recent reviews criticizing their prices, they remain committed to providing the best possible experience for their customers.

Overall, Il Sovrano London is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking high-quality deli fare made with love and care.
