We serve Fish Ambulthiyal on weekends at our restaurant, Colombo Kitchen.
In this video, I visit Hiriketiya Fish Market on the south coast of Sri Lanka, where the fresh fish caught that morning is brought in by local fishermen and sold by the sea.
Fish Ambulthiyal is one of Sri Lanka’s most loved coastal dishes.
For me, this dish is more than just food. It carries the story of Sri Lanka’s fishing villages, early mornings by the ocean, and generations of knowledge passed down through cooking.

It is a true honour to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the House of Commons today in recognition of my dedication to promoting and celebrating Sri Lankan cuisine in the UK.
After proudly watching my four children graduate with their degrees, master's degrees and MBAs, I never imagined I would one day receive an honorary doctorate myself.
This recognition means so much to me and is a reminder that it is never too late to follow your passion. Thank you to my family, my incredible team, and everyone who has supported and believed in my journey.

Founder and Executive Chef of Colombo Kitchen Sylvia Perera was named Culinary Innovator of the Year at the British Asian Who’s Who Awards 2026 and was included in the British Asian POWER 100 list. The Sri Lankan born chef was recognised for championing Sri Lankan cuisine through her Colombo Kitchen restaurants in Worcester Park and Putney.

A story I've never shared before...
Just as I was preparing to sign the lease for our second Colombo Kitchen restaurant in Putney, I received news that changed everything. I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Within weeks, I underwent surgery. Most people would have understood if I had paused the restaurant plans, but after so many years of dreaming, building and working towards this moment, I couldn't bring myself to give up.
Just a few weeks later, we opened our doors in Putney.
Whist I was prioritising training the team, finalising menus, overseeing operations and welcoming our first guests, I was also preparing for chemotherapy. Soon after opening, my treatment began. In between chemotherapy sessions I would still make my way to the restaurant to check on the team, taste the food and make sure everything was running as it should.
It wasn't easy. There were moments of fear, exhaustion and uncertainty. But there was also purpose, passion and the incredible support of my family, team and customers.
Today, when I look around our Putney restaurant, I don't just see a business. I see resilience. I see hope. I see proof that even during the hardest chapters of life, it's possible to keep moving forward.
If there's one thing this experience taught me, it's that strength isn't about never struggling. It's about continuing despite the struggle.
