Meet the Makers: Vale dos Ares 🍷

We’re closing this season’s wine series with something special.

Join us on Saturday 13 June at Bar Douro City as we welcome Miguel Queimado of Vale dos Ares, a vigneron crafting precise, expressive wines in the historic sub-region of Monção e Melgaço.

Working with family vineyards dating back to 1683, Miguel is part of a new generation championing the potential of the region and its signature grape, Alvarinho.

Expect an afternoon of discovery, conversation and beautifully focused wines from one of Vinho Verde’s most exciting producers.

🥩 A UK FIRST 🥩

We’re excited to announce the first edition of the Native Breed Series, welcoming Carnes Irmãos Unidos to London with an exclusive export of their exceptional Maronesa beef, appearing in the UK for the very first time.

This new supper club series celebrates Portugal’s indigenous breeds, producers and food culture, beginning with a five-course menu centred around Maronesa from Trás-os-Montes, one of the country’s most distinctive native cattle breeds.

From petiscos and small plates to a prime steak centrepiece, the menu showcases the beautifully marbled meat and distinctive depth of flavour of Maronesa beef, sourced from mature native-breed cattle raised by Carnes Irmãos Unidos, a family of butchers and farm owners in Carrazedo do Alvão.

The dinner follows Bar Douro founder Max Graham and Executive Chef Neuza’s recent journey through Northern Portugal, meeting producers and exploring the traditions that continue to inspire our cooking.

An optional wine pairing will be available, alongside access to our full cellar list and extensive by-the-glass selection.

Since day one, our Croquetes de Alheira have held a permanent place on the menu, a small petisco deeply rooted in Portuguese food culture and tradition.

Alheira is one of Portugal’s most historic sausages, originating in the north of the country centuries ago. Made with bread, garlic and game or poultry, it was traditionally smoked to preserve it through the cold mountain winters of Trás-os-Montes. Over time, it became one of Portugal’s most beloved regional specialities: rich, smoky and deeply comforting.

We source ours from Fumeiro de Barroso in the Montalegre highlands, where the sausages are still produced using traditional methods and slowly smoked over oakwood in the fresh mountain air.

At Bar Douro, we fold the alheira through shredded chicken with onion, garlic and parsley before hand-shaping each croquette, coating it in panko and frying it fresh to order. Served with house lemon mayo, every bite balances crisp texture with smoky richness and bright citrus.

For us, these croquettes represent the kind of Portuguese cooking we’ve always wanted to champion: rooted in provenance, shaped by history and made with care from start to finish 🇵🇹

The compass, bússola, reflects Portugal’s long and enduring relationship with the sea 🌊🧭

For centuries, Portuguese navigators travelled across oceans, connecting Portugal with Africa, India, Asia, Japan and South America through maritime routes that carried ingredients, spices and culinary traditions between cultures.

Through ports such as Goa, Malacca and Macau, Portugal became part of a rich exchange of food and cooking techniques that helped shape Portuguese cuisine as we know it today. Cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, tea and sugar all became part of Portugal’s evolving gastronomy, while Portuguese trade routes also helped introduce chilli peppers from the Americas into Africa and Asia.

Culinary exchanges with Japan during the Nanban period are even believed to have influenced the frying techniques that later evolved into tempura, a reminder of how food continues to tell stories of cultural connection across borders.

Today, many of these influences remain woven into Portuguese cooking, reflecting centuries of shared exchange and connection through food 🇵🇹

Secretos de Porco Preto 🐖✨

Once a well-kept secret among Portuguese butchers, the secreto cut has long been prized for its tenderness and deep, nutty flavour. A true reflection of the Alentejo, where black pigs roam freely beneath cork and oak trees, feeding on acorns during the montanheira season.

We serve it simply: sliced and blushing pink, finished with sweet, slow-cooked peppers & onions and fresh coriander. A dish rooted in tradition, meant to be shared and savoured just as they do in the south of Portugal.

Few things say Portugal quite like a bifana.

Ours starts with pork shoulder, sliced thin and slowly poached in white wine, garlic and fermented pepper paste. Tender and full of flavour, served in our house-baked papo seco, soft inside with just the right bite.

Best with a cold Super Bock, as it should be.

Cegonha Branca (White Stork) 🤍🌿🇵🇹

With the arrival of spring, Portugal begins to stir. Early mornings fill with birdsong as migratory species return, marking the change of season.

One bird arrives more quietly.

The Cegonha Branca doesn’t sing like the others. Instead, it announces its presence with the distinctive clatter of its beak.

Many return from Africa to the very same nest each year, while others now remain in Portugal year-round, having become part of the landscape.

Perched high on rooftops, church towers and chimneys, they’re a familiar sign of spring across the country.

A quiet ritual, repeated year after year, woven into life across Portugal 🤍

A curated selection celebrating the depth and diversity of Portugal’s cheese culture. We work closely with small producers across the country to bring together distinctive styles, regions and traditions on one plate.

Three cheeses from three regions we love, served with homemade oat biscuits and tomato jam:

Queijo de Seia Amanteigado
An ultra-creamy, spoonable raw sheep’s milk cheese from Serra da Estrela

Queijo Ilha São Miguel
A firm, nutty cow’s milk cheese aged for 9 months in the Azores

Queijo Chiba
A rustic, tangy raw goat’s milk cheese made by .pratas in Ribatejo

Pitau Branco “Top Gun Cat” is available by the glass at both Bar Douro restaurants.

Playful, a little rebellious, and not taking itself too seriously, much like Hugo Mendes himself.

The tasting may be sold out, but you can still try it for yourself.
