the_kapihan

the_kapihan The Kapihan is a family-run coffee shop located in Battersea, London that serves a rotating selection of specialty micro lot coffee and traditional Filipino pandesal. Inspired by their grandfather's love for barako coffee and his daily routine, the owners went on a journey to discover the best coffee producers in the Philippines and learned the craft of baking from scratch. The result is a unique coffee experience that brings together the flavours of over 7,000 islands.

Sorsogon Pili Nut X Maple Pie 🥧

At the heart of this pie is the pili nut. Indigenous to Philippines, Pili from Sorsogon — is a Filipino treasure, rare and delicate, deeply tied to Bicolano heritage. Harvesting Pili is very labor intensive careful work, which is why it’s prized and often quite expensive.

Its so common to find Pili nuts as pasalubongs. Jammed in a jar salted or caramelised. Our Head Barista Shelby is a proud Bicolana from Masbate, and has always spoken of how Pili Nuts are grown wild in Bicol and are the pride of Bicolanos, made into her favourite sweet, the classic small Pili Tart and caramelised brittle 😊

We have deshelled and roasted from raw pili, reveals a intense buttery, nutty depth that rivals cashew, macadamia and pistachio , but carries a flavor uniquely ours 🇵🇭 .

Brown butter adds caramelized richness, maple syrup brings smooth sweetness, a sprinkle of Asin Tibuok salt balances everything with a clean, mineral finish and a touch of Kalamansi Zest for brightness.

Supplies are extremely limited. Once these pili nuts are gone, they’re gone.

Who ate all the pies ? See you this Bank Holiday Weekend 😊✌️

Come Run With ALON 🌊

For the past 6 months, every Sunday at 10am we’ve had the pleasure of running every weekend with ALON, a brilliant project founded by Jasz and her team bringing together fitness, mental wellbeing and community, all in the beautiful surroundings of Battersea Park, right by the Big Kubo.

It’s become a great initiative as we have always wanted to promote fitness and wellbeing, being so close to the park. It’s a chance to get outside, move your body, meet new people, clear your head and be part of something positive.

To celebrate 6 months of running together, we’re doing a special breakfast giveaway after this week’s run!

As long as you want to move and make connections, you are welcome here 🌊

📍 138 Battersea Park Road SW11 4LY

Follow the official Alon page to keep up with new announcements. See you this weekend ✌️

Malunggay, Keso x Pulot
🌿 🧀 🍯

Dried Malunggay Leaf, Feta Vorras Cheese and Philippine Kiwot Honey from Batangas.

New weekend addition: our take on Malunggay Pandesal 🌿. We shaped it like playful knot, it ties together the earthy herby goodness of malunggay with the creamy, tangy salty bite of the Neal’s Yard feta vorras cheese. Para siyang spanakopita na nag‑bakasyon sa Pilipinas — and came home as pandesal 😋

Malunggay pandesal is everywhere back home, but ours has a twist. The subtle bitterness of the dried leaves contrasts with the soft, slightly sweet sourdough pandesal crumb. The Feta Vorras cheese from local Neal's Yard Dairy gives a very rich, salty, and moreish bite 👌

Topped with Philippine Kiwot honey 🍯 from the native stingless bee. We will be showcasing this more 👌😋. Adds a distinctive sour sweet almost tamarind or pomegranate like.

Malunggay (moringa) is packed with antioxidants and a superfood which is commonly grown in our backyards.

Last shot is our favourite malunggay pandesal from back home and inspiration for this, from our local Panaderia in Pontevedra, Capiz.

Asin Tibuok Espesyal Kapé - Limited Release

The Philippines is blessed with many native salts, each carrying its own terroir and tradition. From Bohol comes Asin Tibuok — painstakingly crafted by boiling seawater in coconut husks until pure crystals emerge. A heritage process, a taste of the islands. You can taste the purity of the ocean combined with subtle smokiness.

We’ve paired this Asin Tibuok with our Don Ruperto blend — a blend inspired by our Lolo using Philippine‑grown robusta and arabica — to create a drink that is a salty sweet blend we enjoy...

- Asin Tibuok Creamy Silky Oat Foam

- Black Don Ruperto Kape — bold, full‑bodied, proudly local.

- Homemade Coconut Caramel — slow‑cooked coconut sweetness to balance the salt.

This is not just Kapé. It’s heritage in a cup. A collaboration of land, sea, and craft.

Available only in small batches from the Big Kubo. Once the Asin Tibuok runs out, this drink disappears. Taste it while you can 😋

⭐ Pandesal ⭐

Pandesal is not a bread we grew up with. Its through the stories of our my mum that enchanted us to recreate something that she remembers and other filipinos recognise as the perfect start to a day or that merienda time in the afternoon with a coffee.

It has been an arduous and ballbreaking journey of creating and perfecting a recipe. We were not simply handed a recipe to follow or used one from a book or blog. We wanted to ensure we do not serve dry pansesal, achieving a balance of sweetness, richness and most of all ensuring our mum approves 😅

After countless nights, tweaking batches and taking inspiration of versions back home.  Our recipe that our Nigel has come up wit has been recognised by the Guild of Fine Food with a Great Taste Award ✨

Our take on pandesal is using natural rise with no additives or presavtives, using the best of British Shipton Mill flour and British Butter. We bake fresh daily just like back home.

Maraming maraming salamat for the recognition and our guests who to continue to support every day🙏

What people say

The_kapihan is a coffee shop that offers a unique interpretation of the modern-day Kapihan. The story behind the shop is heartwarming, as it was inspired by the owners' Lolo Ruperto's love for barako coffee and pandesal. The rotating selection of specialty micro-lot coffee is brewed to perfection in a cast iron pot, just like how Lolo Ruperto used to do it. The aroma of the coffee can be smelled from across the road, making it an irresistible treat for any coffee lover.

The owners' journey of discovery led them to some of the best artisanal producers around the Philippines, where they learned about traditional baking techniques from scratch. After years of practice, they are now proud to be part of the wonderful community in Battersea, serving fine flavors from over 7,000 islands.

The family-run business founded by two brothers David & Nigel Motley, their sister Rosemary and David’s wife Plams has become a hidden gem tucked away in a little corner on Battersea Park Road. It's a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of delicious coffee while catching up with friends or reading your favorite book. If you're looking for an authentic and heartwarming experience with great coffee and baked goods, then the_kapihan is definitely worth checking out!
