I used to live in this part of town and consequently had sampled the goods on offer at all the local Indian takeaway outlets over a number of years. I don't believe Bombay Rickshaw was operating when I last went in search of a curry. Anyway, last night saw me back in the old manor for one night only, minding a cat for a friend, whose cupboard was bare except for cat-food, and the local food shops, rather surprisingly, were all shuttered up and asleep. So I turned to Just-Eat and booked a modest (well, no, slightly greedy) repast from Bombay Rickshaw. Onion bhajis, mixed kebab starters, lamb dhopiaza, aloo ghobi, pilao rice, plain naan and poppadum. All for me. It was all exceedingly good. Fresh, fresh to the point where everything was recognisable, in both individual shape and taste. No 'one-size-fits-all' curry sauce gloop, with chilis chucked in - the heat was lightly applied, where required, and absent where not. A bit of crunch still there in the cauliflower. And the bhaji - no soggy bits, no pasty floury outer coating, no bits of dinosaur exoskeleton or canon ball where the poor thing had been microwaved and remicrowaved until it turned into masonry. These were light, crispy, crunchy - almost tempura-like nuggets of batter, with a moist but not greasy centre. A real revelation - I hadn't had an onion bhaji as good as these since I went to an Indian cookery demonstration class and watched the chef conjure them up over a charcoal flame in front of me. A brilliant meal, all round - and, surprisingly for an area where people not only think it's reasonable to spend a tenner on a loaf but will actually queue up in the rain for the privilege of being sold one - affordable to members of the lower rungs of society like me. Cannot recommend highly enough
