Team tasting complete, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Last week, our chefs gathered around the table to taste Maronesa beef ahead of our Maronesa Supper Club. Raised in the mountains of Trás-os-Montes, Maronesa is one of Portugal’s most distinctive native cattle breeds, prized for its exceptional flavour, beautiful marbling and deep connection to the landscape it comes from.
During a recent journey through Northern Portugal, founder Max and Executive Chef Neuza met João and André of Carnes Irmãos Unidos, whose work with local farmers helps preserve this remarkable breed and the traditions behind it. After tasting the beef at source, we knew we wanted to bring that experience to London.
On Wednesday 8th July, we’ll be serving a five-course sharing menu celebrating Maronesa beef, culminating in a ribeye on the bone from the Carnes Irmãos Unidos Selection Range, sourced from carefully aged cattle and imported exclusively for the evening.
A rare opportunity to experience one of Portugal’s finest native breeds in an intimate setting, with only a limited number of seats remaining.

June in Portugal belongs to the saints 🎉🇵🇹
Santo António on the 13th. São João on the 24th. São Pedro on the 29th.
Three saints, three cities, one month of joyful street celebrations.
In Lisbon, neighbours grill sardines outside their homes. In Porto, strangers tap each other on the head with plastic hammers and nobody thinks twice about it.
This Father’s Day, bring Dad along and celebrate like the Portuguese.
We’re bringing the spirit of the Santos Populares to Bar Douro London Bridge every Sunday throughout June, with grilled sardines, Portuguese wine, live music and plenty of festive cheer.

Cavala em Escabeche 🐟🌿
A classic Algarvian petisco, Cavala em Escabeche celebrates one of Portugal’s oldest culinary traditions. Introduced to the Iberian Peninsula during the Moorish period, escabeche evolved from a practical method of preserving fish and meat in vinegar, spices and aromatics into a celebrated expression of Portuguese flavour.
British mackerel is lightly cured, charred over the flame and marinated overnight with red onion, carrot, fennel, bay and vinegar. The result is rich yet delicate, with bright acidity balancing the fish’s natural oiliness.
Finished with fresh pea shoots and dill oil, it’s a dish that captures the spirit of Portugal’s coast, where simple ingredients, time-honoured techniques and bold flavours come together at the table. 🇵🇹🌊

In the mountains of Trás-os-Montes, preserving a native breed means protecting a landscape, a tradition and generations of knowledge.
For André, João and the team at Carnes Irmãos Unidos, Maronesa is more than exceptional beef. It is one of Portugal’s great native breeds, raised with patience and care in the Serra do Alvão, where family farming and respect for the land remain at the heart of daily life.
Join us on Wednesday 8 July for our Native Breed Series: Maronesa with Carnes Irmãos Unidos, a five-course supper club at Bar Douro London Bridge celebrating the producers, landscapes and traditions behind one of Portugal’s most distinctive breeds.
